Fail: The Obama Dress
![]()
Victoria Rowell came to the Emmy’s wearing Obama dress that made it to that night’s worst dressed list. The cut of the dress is actually decent. It’s what’s on it that turned off the fashionista.
The dress was made from the very same fabric used to commemorate the President’s trip to Ghana last July. The fabric is actually listed on Etsy, which is actually interesting…but perhaps not for a dress to an awards show, right?
This vibrant blue fabric emblazoned with the word ‘Akwaaba’ (welcome) commemorated the visit of President Barack Obama to Ghana in July 2009. Traditional Adinkra symbols provide a border. Genuine original manufactured by ATL (Akosombo Textiles Limited, Ghana).
Historically, printed fabric has been a way to record events in West Africa. During the colonial era, Akan funeral cloths stamped with Adinkra symbols inspired the wax-prints manufactured by major European cloth companies for the West African market. After independence, the fabric markets came full circle with African companies like ATL manufacturing printed fabric for domestic consumers.
