Reports from The Guardian (UK) and the Associated Press say that sales for sewing machines are on the rise. Grandma’s trusty gadget from the old days is once again deemed important.

A lot of factors come into play for this growing trend. One is probably a result of the recession. People seem to want to save money on clothes these days so instead of buying, they go for a more customized, individual look. Customization usually involves using cheaper materials like clothes from the thrift store. Customization also opens up room for experimentation…which is how fashion evolves.

And thanks to TV programs like Project Runway, there are those that seem to be into sewing more, in the hope of finding the perfect cut and the perfect style for their own body.
