Self Defends Photo Manipulation of Kelly Clarkson
Magazines Photoshopping any hint of reality out of images isn’t exactly a surprise anymore, it’s moved far into realm of the standard industry standard. While Kelly Clarkson is very happy with herself, it seems Self editors Lucy Danzinger isn’t quite as pleased.
Self is the latest to go under fire for the Photoshopping of singer Kelly Clarkson.
Self editor, Lucy Danzinger defends the decision for the editing in a blog post:
“[W]e edit the film and choose the best pictures. This is done in tandem with the star; the creative director, Cindy Searight; the photographer; and myself. Then we allow the postproduction process to happen, where we mark up the photograph to correct any awkward wrinkles in the blouse, flyaway hair and other things that might detract from the beauty of the shot. This is art, creativity and collaboration. It’s not, as in a news photograph, journalism. It is, however, meant to inspire women to want to be their best. That is the point.”
The reason was to capture Kelly’s ‘confidence’ and the editor has defended the move by regaling tales of her own images being manipulated at her own request. The post falters in giving some kind of legitimacy to editing the image, instead it gives out
The tale was a bit contrived, of a proudly finished marathon. Yet, as proud as Danzinger was of finishing the race, she was bothered by her own image, instead of focusing on her achievement, her own thighs took her mental spotlight.
In closing she defended the decision by boiling it all down into a simple sound byte of a cover isn’t supposed to be ‘real looking:
My husband has given me an appreciation for the beauty of a snapshot. But that isn’t a cover. A cover’s job is to sell the magazine, and we do that, every month, thanks to our readers. So thank you.’
