Mad Men Brings Back Pencil Skirts and 60’s Style

Fashion Emmy Nominees

Hmmmm…”Mad Men” fashion.

I have not seen this show all that much but I’m aware of how fashion plays a big part in the series. It’s set in advertising agency in the 60’s, a time when men and women alike really took time to dress up and cocktail dresses and suits were pretty much part of everyone’s wardrobe. The show’s style is so sleek and glamourous that many fashion designers and retails stores are taking cues from it. It may have even brought back pencil skirts and skinny ties on sale racks.  And like “Sex In The City” from three years ago, “Mad Men” is slowly influencing today’s styles and trends.

It’s costume designer, Janie Bryant, has been cited several times for creating over 200 costumes in the series, so far.

To kick off the show’s third season which premiered yesterday, its network, AMC, teamed up with retail store, Banana Republic.

“A collection based on the show includes a smooth, gray pencil skirt and printed tie blouse modeled afterChristina Hendricks‘ curvy, head-turning head secretary Joan Halloway, and a slim, belted sheath, modeled after secretary-turned-copywriter Peggy Olson (Elisabeth Moss).

A plaid fedora, striped tie and dark suit is based on the show’s main character Don Draper — the creative director of advertising agency Sterling Cooper — played by Jon Hamm.”

Banana Republic is even offering a walk-in role for their Mad Men contest.
