Going it Alone: DIY Couture
While the term couture has taken on a bit of a different meaning that it was originally intended, at it’s very base it’s about extremely high end, custom clothing with an extravagant attention to detail. Which, alone makes it so intertwined with high end apparel and simply encompasses all that is truly chic.
The French take haute couture extremely seriously. So seriously that a company must meet very exact standards to so much as use the phrase. Out of the many designers, presently only a very small percentage have this honor.
However, there is a new and rather large already movement dedicated to DIY Couture. With groups of people already congregating online to show off their own custom self-destined pieces. While there isn’t a feasible way for them to be able to meet such exacting requirements to use the haute couture name, they still create some quite enviable pieces.
Part of the reason the phrase is so desirable as with many things in the fashion industry, is the sheer exclusivity of it. Not only for the designer, but for the buyer. They have the chance to own a one-of-a kind piece. While this term is misused often, nothing off the rack will typically live to the quality.
